Gomel Belarus 2011-2019

Gomel, the second largest city in Belarus, is located in the southeast of the republic, near the border with Ukraine. The area around the city is considered one of the most contaminated by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Even today, people suffer from the consequences of the reactor accident. Since this devastating event, volunteers in the Lutheran Church District of Uelzen have been committed to helping Gomel. Together with the Deutsche Kleiderstiftung (German clothing foundation), a relief cooperation was established. The Gomel working group sorted and packed relief supplies. Starting in 2011, we financed the transport costs, assisted with all logistical challenges and took over the remains of the sorting for the fulfillment of further aid projects.
